What is the OET

The Occupational English Test (OET) is designed to help student in the medical and healthcare sectors where English is used. All four language skills are assessed, with Writing and Speaking tests available in 12 different areas of healthcare. All candidates take the same Reading and Listening tests on the same day.

What Does The OET Test Include?

There are 4 elements in the OET test. A standard Reading and Listening elements and a profession specific Speaking and Writing one.

OET Test-Reading and Listening

The questions and the content for the reading and Listening test are the same for all healthcare professions.

Reading

60 minutes

You must read and understand different types of texts on health-related subjects.

Listening

approx. 45 minutes

You must understand a range of health-related recordings such as patient consultations and lectures.

OET Test-Writing and Speaking components

The questions and content for the Writing and Speaking test are specific to your profession.  For example, different speaking and writing tests for nurses, doctors, dentist…

Writing

45 minutes

The questions are based on typical workplace situations.

The task is to write a letter, usually a referral letter. Sometimes, a different type of letter is required: e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient, carer, or group.

Speaking

approx. 20 minutes

In a private room you will take part in two role-plays. You take your professional role (as a healthcare professional) while the examiner plays a patient or client, or sometimes a relative or carer.

Test results and scores

You will receive a Statement of Results which shows your score for each of the four sub-tests, on a scale from 0 to 500. Each of the four sub-tests is assessed in a specific way. You usually need a minimum result of 350  (equivalent to a minimum 7 on the IELTS).

Widely Recognised

The OET is widely recognised by recruiters in many parts of the world including the UK, Australia, the USA, Spain, Ireland and more. The OET test can be taken in 46 countries across the world.

OET is accepted as proof of English proficiency for visas, study, registration and employment in healthcare.

Can I Use The OET Test To Apply For A UK Visa?

OET is accepted for all Tier 2 UKVI visas for doctors, nurses, midwives and dentists, including the new Health and Care Visa which is in Tier 2 (General).

To aim for the required score in OET you need Upper intermediate Plus (B2+) level of English to start.  Our course is designed to maximise your chances of obtaining your OET result of 350 plus. If you have a level that is lower than B2, then we would recommend a General English programme combined with some OET training to start.

Designed Specifically To Your Needs

Before your course starts, we will give you an English level test. This is so we can see where we will need to start your preparation. We will also arrange to meet you online for a free consultation which will give you the opportunity to tell us about your job, your plans and OET test requirements.  It is based on this consultation and testing that we will then be able to design a course that is specific to you.

During the Course

We will familiarise you with the four different components and with the different types of questions. You will be given lots of practice on how to approach each question and what strategies to use when you give you answers.  You will study essential vocabulary for passing the test and take part in role plays to practise your speaking skills.

Students will receive weekly one to one or group live lessons that are tailored to the individual needs of the student and can be scheduled according to student’s availability.

SLC courses combine video lessons audio tracks, past papers and interactive activities as well as the ability to record yourself speaking in different medical scenarios. It also allows you to track and monitor your progress. The materials have been written by accomplished medical professionals. When you complete the course, you will receive a formal CPD standards certificate which is accepted internationally across multiple professional sectors.

You will be given practice tests to do at home and your teacher will mark and review each test for you in class so you can clearly see what part or parts of the test you need to focus on. More practice and guidance will be given to you in the areas that you find most challenging as the course progresses.

During the course, your teacher will follow and monitor your progress and offer regular feedback tutorials that will help you to plan your study and eventually decide on when you should take the test. Your teacher will also be able to give you advice regarding this.

When Can I Take the Course?

You can choose the number of hours per week you wish to study for. You might want to book for an Intensive week or two if you need to get your OET results soon and in a short time frame. You could start with just an hour or two a week if you have plenty of time before you plan to take the test.
